Robert A Young
lost his life at sea when the Newcastle cargo steamer Edith
sailed from Shields on 26/02/1869 for Bergen. Missing presumed
sunk with all 15 hands.
SUPPOSED LOSS OF THE SCREW STEAMER EDITH OF NEWCASTLE.
It is almost a matter certainty that the screw steamer
EDITH, belonging to Newcastle, and which sailed from
Shields on the 26th February last for Bergen, has been
lost and all hands with her.
On the night the EDITH sailed a strong gale came on, and
it is supposed that her fires had been put out and that
she had gone down.
The owner is Mr Schlesinger, of Wallsend. She was under
the command of Captain Cavill, who was making his first
voyage in her, her late commander being unable to sail
that voyage. Captain Cavill was a married man, and his
wife is residing in North Shields.
There were 15 hands all told in the vessel, including
the master. Nearly all the crew were married.
