Stephen Saville, a town missionary was born and lived in the traditionally silk producing town of Macclesfield in Cheshire. He was a silk weaver by profession. How or why he moved to South Shields with his family I have been unable to find out. He had five children and lived at 8 Winterbottom St. When he died he was living at number 21 with his housekeeper. His wife had died three years previously. For twenty five years Stephen had been a respected town missionary, and was the first missionary appointed by the South Shields River and Town Missionary Society. He had the interest of the society thoroughly at heart and long after his retirement from active service, he went about visiting the sick and dying as had been his custom previously. His work with the poor of the town and the Union Workhouse would be sorely missed by those he comforted. He was also actively engaged in Sunday School work, and he was the first superintendent of the Mission School at Hoppers Quay, Wapping St in connection with the Sunday School Union.
